Breaking the Bubble in Europe
I grew up in a bubble I call it. My dad would say we are upper middle class. I was shy and very scared of change. I ate at the same table at lunch everyday and sat with the same people. I didn’t like to talk to people I didn’t know. I stuttered when I was nervous. I knew I had learn how to talk to people I didn't know so I forced myself. I went to Europe.
I was so nervous because I had never been out of American or around people who didn't speak English. I had also never traveled alone. I was terrified. In France I met a guy who was a friend of my roommates. I was so nervous to meet him because I was going to a country where I didn't speak the language plus I didn't know him. I was completely out of my comfort zone but I knew I had to do this for myself. His English wasn’t very good but that was part of the experience. We communicated with the little English he knew, hand gestures and facial expressions. When we went to Spain I used the Spanish I knew to get around.
Now I am a lot more confident when I have to get out of my comfort zone. I still like my comfort zone but I'm able to get out of it a lot more now with being nervous. I learned that its good to experience new things and open your eyes to new people and culture.

Hi Cassandra!
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to feeling in a bubble. I think since college, I have realized that there is so little in this world that I have seen. I am studying abroad in Ireland this summer and I also hope to step outside of my comfort zone.
Thanks for sharing!

Wow, this is something I would WANT to do, but I don't know if I would ever actually do it. I'm glad you did. Venturing into the unknown is a great way to discover parts of you that you didn't know you had and to expand your understanding of the world.

Hi Cassandra,
ReplyDeleteI think it was very brave of you to so drastically step out of your comfort zone. I think traveling is a great way to experience new things about the world and about yourself. I know when I first traveled outside of the country it was an amazing experience and since then I keep trying to travel to new places. I also think it is awesome that you feel that you are now more confident with going out of your comfort zone.
